Touchscreen information kiosk components
Touchscreen
- Can be internally fitted inside the monitor, or fitted externally. Internally fitted is better for public access kiosks. External "add-on" touchscreens, though cheaper, are prone to damage.
- Technology - For general public access, in Indian dusty conditions, the most durable is ClearTek Capacitive technology, the only touch technology not affected by dirt, grease, or other surface contaminants. Resistive, infrared and surface acoustic technologies are not recommended because they get affected by dust.
- Touchscreen should have anti-microbial coating.
Monitor
- Type - LCD, if sleek appearance is needed, or if there is a space constraint. CRT, if wider visibility is needed. Any standard CRT available in the market can be used. CRT's are cheaper.
- Size - 17" CRT is adequate for most information kiosks. Larger, if visual impact is critical & cost is not a factor.
PC
- Any standard desktop PC can be used. Specifications depend on software requirements. But multimedia is required, with a spare USB port for touch screen
UPS
- With sealed maintenance free batteries, and adequate back-up till gensets come on.
Kiosk
- As per desired design. For low volume purchases, generally made from laminated wood or powder coated metal. For large requirements, can be made from metal or moulded plastic/ fiberglass.
- Should have cooling fan, lockable doors, sliding drawers, power distribution, and sufficient space for all components to fit.
Software
- As per customer requirements, keeping in mind touchscreen kiosk requirements of large buttons and easy instructions. Guidelines given.
